Royal Troon’s back nine proved tough to master for the early starters on Day 1 of the 2016 British Open. After Colin Montgomerie got the tournament underway at his home venue, the players out on course in the morning lit up the front nine with birdies. However, after the turn, the upwind holes caused problems for all, with red on the leaderboard scarce from the 10th onwards. Impressive early on was Patrick Reed, who shot a five-under 66 to take the clubhouse lead, as was Justin Thomas, who is a shot back after a 67. Here is how the leaderboard is shaping up on Day 1 and a closer look at how...

Rory McIlroy shot a two-under par round of 69 on Day 1 of the 2016 British Open at Royal Troon. The Northern Irishman’s quest for a second win in this illustrious competition got off to a strong start, as he made five birdies in his round. McIlroy was four-under par through the front nine, but like plenty of players on course, he found the finish tough to master. He made a double bogey at 13 and a bogey at 14, but he picked up a shot on the way in to remain in a strong position. Here is the scorecard in full for the 2014 Open champion and a detailed look at how the world No. 4 got his...

World No. 3 Jordan Spieth endured a frustrating opening day at the 2016 British Open as he carded a level-par round of 71 at Royal Troon on Thursday. From tee to green, the American was largely excellent, but he missed a number of makeable birdie putts, especially on the markedly easier front nine. Spieth went out in 35 and came back in 36 to finish five shots back from Patrick Reed, the clubhouse leader when he finished his round. Here is the 22-year-old’s scorecard from his opening 18 holes in Ayrshire, Scotland: Spieth put his approach to the first stiff...

We all know about the stars who seem most likely to dominate at the British Open. However, the top-ranked players don’t always win. Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth are all excellent golfers, but that doesn’t mean those from the second or third rank don’t have a chance. After a quick glance at the latest scores, we look at four British Open golfers who have a chance to take glory away from the favorites. While the first round is already under way, there is still time to give the following golfers serious consideration. Phil Mickelson had perhaps...

The 2016 majors have been unpredictable to this point, which only brings an extra bit of excitement into the British Open. We came into the year expecting the Big Three to take the next step with Jason Day, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy representing the clear top of the sport. However, Danny Willett surprised everyone with a win at the Masters Tournament in April, and then Dustin Johnson broke through with his first major win at the U.S. Open. There are still high hopes for the trio of young stars, but there are other players to keep track of over the course of the tournament. Here is a...

One of the most prestigious events of the golfing calendar will tee off on Thursday in the form of the 2016 British Open. Zach Johnson will be out to defend his title at The Open, while 2014 winner Rory McIlroy will be hoping to reclaim it after injury denied him the chance to compete last year. Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson and Jason Day are also likely to be in contention. The last time the championship was held at Royal Troon, Todd Hamilton came away as the surprise winner. It will be intriguing to see if there are any contenders out of left field this time around. According to the Telegraph,...

Is an American golfer destined to win The Open Championship at Royal Troon Golf Club in South Ayrshire, Scotland? While American stars have often had difficulties in international competitions—see the Ryder Cup—they have dominated at the Scottish golf site. Since Bobby Locke of South Africa won at Troon in 1950, American golfers have reeled off six straight victories at the site, and they have the firepower to do it again. Those winners were Arnold Palmer (1962), Tom Weiskopf (1973), Tom Watson (1982), Mark Calcavecchia (1989), Justin Leonard (1997) and Todd Hamilton (2004). Golfers...

Phil Mickelson stole all the headlines during Thursday’s play at the 145th Open Championship. The American tore through the course at Royal Troon to record an eight-under 63. Mickelson chased a major championship record score of 62 up until the final hole of his round, where his birdie putt lipped the hole and drifted inches wide to the right. Although he wasn’t able to break the overall major record for a single round, Mickelson earned the course record at Royal Troon by three strokes, per the PGA Tour on Twitter. Mickelson takes a three-stroke advantage into Friday’s...
