Phil Mickelson entered Friday with the lead after a 63 in the first round, tying the major record, and while his second-round performance was nowhere near as dominant, he once again entered the clubhouse with the lead by virtue of a two-under 69. Here is a look at the current state of the leaderboard at the Open Championship, along with further analysis of the top contenders. ...

The 2016 British Open at Royal Troon has surprised as Friday’s action unfolds. Good and bad surprises, too. The bad is names such as Jordan Spieth struggling not only on the tricky course, but in the oft-wild winds. After Round 1, he was lucky to sit even, though plenty of time remains for him and others such as Bubba Watson (one under par after Round 1) to make a comeback. The good surprise? Phil Mickelson and others charging ahead and putting themselves in great positioning before what is sure to be a stunning finale over the weekend. Here’s a look at the live leaderboard and the...

Phil Mickelson wanted to get off to a good start, but what he did in the first round of the British Open bordered on the ridiculous Thursday. Mickelson fired an eight-under-par 63 to take a three-stroke lead in the third major of the year. Mickelson fired four birdies on the front nine at Royal Troon and did the same thing on the back nine of the Scottish course. He did not have a single bogey during the round and was on top of his game throughout the day. Mickelson recorded one of the greatest victories of his career with a sensational final-round 66 at Muirfield‘s 2013 British...

While the rest of the world was focused on players like Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson stepped up in the first round of the 2016 British Open to remind everyone he’s still capable of doing great things. Now the pressure shifts to Mickelson as he carries a three-shot lead over Patrick Reed and Martin Kaymer heading into Friday’s second round. His only previous victory in this tournament came in 2013. McIlroy was the last wire-to-wire winner in 2014, so Lefty has a lot of work remaining. Here’s how the leaderboard looks heading into the...

Phil Mickelson was centimeters from history. The veteran golfer roared to the top of the leaderboard at the 2016 British Open on Thursday, shooting an impressive eight-under 63 at Royal Troon Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. So good was Mickelson on the day that he nearly became the first man to shoot a 62 in a round at one of golf’s majors. Mickelson had an 18-foot birdie putt on No. 18 for a chance at the record, but his attempt lipped out, leaving him tantalizingly short of making history. The PGA Tour shared the moment: His caddie was just as distraught, via...

Somebody up there—or perhaps a resident of a slightly warmer locale down south—doesn’t want anybody messing with major championship history. Maybe it’s the apparition of Old Tom Morris or the specter of legendary Bobby Jones. Otherwise, all the more plausible explanations have run thin. Over and over, superstars seeking to rewrite the single-round Grand Slam scoring record have been inexplicably turned away in the cruelest imaginable fashion, by the last blade of grass or the smallest possible dimple, at the game’s four showcase events. This time, Phil Mickelson walked...

Many of his more-decorated countrymen avoided the Olympics like the plague. Or, at minimum, like a certain oft-cited virus. Other prominent golfers this week, leery about the lack of cuisine and first-world comforts in the United Kingdom, hired a private chef to handle the cooking chores. But in a remarkable role reversal given his prickly reputation, the one-time villain of the PGA Tour, star-crossed Patrick Reed, has reinvented his abrasive public persona at the 145th Open Championship by embracing both issues with enthusiasm and aplomb. He’s converting both fans and birdie chances,...
