The PGA Tour stopped in Connecticut this week for the 2016 Travelers Championship, where Vaughn Taylor, Andrew Loupe and Jerry Kelly jumped into a three-way tie for the lead at six under par after Thursday’s first round. The top of the leaderboard is a jumbled mess, with three players tied for fourth place at five under par and two tied for seventh at four under. Here’s the leaderboard from TPC River Highlands: There’s been a running theme of tense rounds over the last month. The British Open featured a great two-man Sunday battle, with Henrik Stenson matching Phil Mickelson...

Nike announced Wednesday it’s planning to eliminate production of golf equipment and will instead focus on apparel. Kyle Porter of CBS Sports passed along a statement from the company, which didn’t provide a firm timetable for when the equipment operations will cease. That said, the plan is to eventually remove clubs, balls and bags from the Nike Golf brand. “We’re committed to being the undisputed leader in golf footwear and apparel,” Nike Brand president Trevor Edwards said. “We will achieve this by investing in performance innovation for athletes and delivering...

As Jimmy Walker maintained nerves of steel while winning the PGA Championship on Sunday, there was one history-in-the-making point the CBS crew kept referencing: If Walker hung on, it would mean all of golf’s majors in 2016 were claimed by first-time winners. At first glance, that might seem like no more than a fun piece of trivia. But it’s also a testament to how golf’s marquee is steadily adding new names. After all, when we were gearing up to watch the Masters back in April, who would have thought the majors could go a full year without at least one victory from the Big Three...

Forget space. As far as golf goes, Jimmy Walker has conquered the final frontier. A late bloomer and aerospace nut who didn’t win his first PGA Tour event until three years ago at age 34, Walker held off a blistering rally from defending champion Jason Day on Sunday to claim the 98th PGA Championship, his first major title. Walker, a hobbyist who uses his telescope to stare thousands of miles into space for fun, thankfully had his feet on terra firma when it mattered most, making huge putts from nine and three feet on the last two greens to beat Day by a shot at 14 under. There...

Finally, the PGA Championship has a winner who is an astrophotographer! Leading off with a bonus takeaway from soggy Baltusrol, Jimmy Walker, who showed steely resolve over 36 holes Sunday en route to a closing-nine three-under 33 and 14-under winning total, is an avid space photographer. Seriously, he uses a telescope to take pictures of the galaxy. And if the resultant photos don’t fill you with wonder and awe, well, you’re probably a zombie. That is, interestingly, exactly what Dustin Johnson looked like over 36 uninspired holes at Baltusrol’s famed Lower Course. We’ve...

Jason Day’s PGA Championship title defense fell just short Sunday. The reigning champion came in second behind Jimmy Walker, who finished at 14 under for the tournament to stand victorious at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. Day wound up a shot back at 13 under, while Daniel Summerhays was all alone in third place and three golfers tied for fourth: Below is a look at how much the top 10 golfers will earn from the PGA Championship’s $10 million purse, per Golf Digest‘s Joel Beall: Little separated Walker and Day throughout the round, and the title went down to...

The 2016 PGA Championship has come and gone, and with it another season of major tournament golf. Jimmy Walker, a quality PGA Tour player who’d never gotten appreciably close to a win in one of the four spotlight tournaments, finally broke through to the big time Sunday evening with a one-shot defeat of defending PGA champ Jason Day. Walker had a three-shot lead after he birdied No. 17, but he was forced to sweat things out after Day eagled No. 18 to get within one. Walker hit his approach to the par-five 18th into the rough alongside the green but then safely chipped to the putting surface...

It’s official: Jordan Spieth has failed to win a major championship in the 2016 PGA season. Spieth carded a two-under 68 in Sunday’s fourth round at the 2016 PGA Championship. He’s now in a tie for 14th place. Spieth is four strokes behind current clubhouse leader Daniel Summerhays (-10) for the tournament and seven strokes short of overall leader Jimmy Walker (-13). The 23-year-old Texan entered Sunday with 35 holes to play. Rain cut his third round short Saturday after just one hole, leaving him with an early wake-up call for a long day of golf at Baltusrol Golf Club. Spieth,...

Jimmy Walker tops the 2016 PGA Championship leaderboard after 54 holes on Sunday at Baltusrol Golf Course, Springfield, New Jersey after carding a round of 68 to go 11-under for the Championship. Following torrential rain and lightning on Saturday, a huge majority of the golfers who managed to escape the cut were forced to complete their round the following day. Walker now enters the final 18 holes one-stroke clear of defending champion Jason Day, with Brooks Koepka and British Open winner Henrik Stenson a further shot back after carding 66 and 67 respectively. Take a look...
