If the first round of the 2016 Barclays is any indication, the first event of the FedEx Cup should be a nail-biter. Patrick Reed and Martin Laird share the first-round lead after posting five-under scores of 66, but the real story is the tightly packed field at Bethpage Black in Farmingdale, New York. Thirty-two golfers are within four strokes of the lead, and 50 are sitting at even par or better. Emiliano Grillo, Kevin Chappell, Rickie Fowler and J.B. Holmes are sitting in a tie for third place after posting rounds of four under. Reed’s five-under should help assuage...

Jordan Spieth returned to the PGA Tour for the first time in four weeks Thursday at the Barclays, shooting an even-par 71 over the first 18 holes, five shots behind clubhouse leaders Patrick Reed and Martin Laird. This was one of the few tournaments in which Spieth struggled last year, missing the cut after shooting seven over par through 36 holes. He is off to a better start this time around, though two late bogeys cost him. Here’s the leaderboard from the Barclays’ opening round: Spieth’s round appeared as though it would be positive, as he had four birdies...

After starting his day on the back nine, Rory McIlroy played himself into contention at the Barclays at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York, with a solid front nine, finishing his evening with an even-par 71 on Thursday. That left him five strokes behind clubhouse leaders Patrick Reed and Martin Laird, who each shot five-unders on the day. Here’s the leaderboard: McIlroy struggled on the back nine, with bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16. His approach game was on point after that, however. The PGA Tour shared his brilliant approach on No. 18: McIlroy impressed with strong...

Tom Lewis, Joakim Lagergren and Thomas Pieters all got off to scorching starts at the Made in Denmark tournament on Thursday, setting course records of nine-under 62 at the Himmerland Golf and Spa Resort in Farso, Denmark, to grab a share of the lead. The three all played nearly flawless rounds on a course that played very easy, and despite their record-setting pace, they only led by a single shot, as Bradley Dredge finished the day eight-under. Here’s how things are shaping up in Denmark on Day 1 after a memorable day on the European Tour and a closer look at how the action...

Few knew what to expect from golf’s return to the Summer Olympic Games after a 112-year absence, but it seemed to impress even the biggest opponents. Rory McIlroy, who was vocal in his disinterest in the Rio Games, had plenty of positive thoughts on how it was received afterward, per Jason Sobel of ESPN.com: It pleasantly surprised me. There was more people at the golf events than there was at the athletics. It was good to see, it really was. It seems like it was a great atmosphere down there. I think it was one of the cheaper tickets, as well, and I think that encouraged a lot of people...

Cue the Jim Mora video; the FedEx Cup playoffs have arrived. A particularly congested summer, owing to the return of Olympic golf and the PGA Tour’s regular season—which saw four first-time major winners—are behind us. Professional golf’s best lace up their spikes motivated, depending on your level of cynicism, by the pursuit of the FedEx Cup or the corresponding $10 million annuity. Regardless, we’ll be treated to a roster of the best in the game taking on one of the country’s premier public venues this week, and there’s nothing to be unhappy...

The PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup playoffs get underway this week with The Barclays at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York. The Barclays is the first of four tournaments on tour that make up the playoff system for the FedEx Cup, with defending champion Jason Day listed as the +750 betting favorite (wager $100 to win $750) to defend his title at sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark among a strong field of golfers. Last year, Day became one of four golfers ever to shoot a record 19-under-par for the tournament with a four-day total of 261 at Plainfield Country Club in Edison, New Jersey....

You could be excused for feeling the golf calendar has been stuffed fuller than the wallets of Dustin Johnson and Jason Day this season. But with the Wyndham Championship wrapped up, the FedEx Cup playoffs are upon us. And with the arrival of the FedEx Cup comes the staggered end of Ryder Cup qualifying. The process of making the team differs depending on your continent of birth, so before we look at five golfers needing good things to happen in the coming weeks to tee it up at Hazeltine National Golf Club, an explanation. For the U.S. side, eight players will earn spots at the conclusion...

Si Woo Kim earned his first PGA Tour victory on Sunday at the Wyndham Championship, and he made sure to run away from the field in the process after a narrow miss in a playoff loss to Aaron Baddeley at the Barbasol Championship in July. Kim finished at 21 under par for the tournament following Sunday’s three-under 67, which was five strokes clear of second-place finisher Luke Donald. There would be no playoff this time around for the 21-year-old, who did most of the heavy lifting Friday and Saturday. According to Helen Ross of the PGA Tour’s official website, Kim’s 60...
