There is normally a tinge of sadness when Formula One’s annual summer break begins. With a whole month separating one race from the next, teams, drivers and spectators are usually left twiddling their thumbs for four weeks, counting down the days until the Belgian Grand Prix—one of the highlights of a given season—arrives. But this year, the sport’s Spa weekend can wait a while. Following one of the most intense periods in the history of F1, which saw six races held in the space of eight weeks, there was a palpable sense of relief when the latest chequered flag dropped to...

Less than 24 hours after finishing fifth in the German Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel was back behind the wheel of a Formula One car on Monday as Pirelli’s preparations for 2017 began. With wider tyres set to be introduced alongside major bodywork changes next year, Pirelli needs all the information it can get to prepare for F1’s season of change, with Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes providing modified cars to aid the data-gathering process. And Vettel became the first driver to sample the 2017-style tyres on Monday, when he completed a number of laps at Ferrari’s Fiorano circuit. While...

The kidnapped mother-in-law of Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone has been released without any of the $36.5 million (£28 million) ransom being paid, as confirmed by Elisabete Sato of the Sao Paulo police. Aparecida Schunck, the mother of Ecclestone’s wife, Fabiana Flosi, was taken from her home in Sao Paulo 10 days ago, but police have now confirmed she’s been freed, as reported by BBC News. Police reportedly descended upon the property where Schunck, 67, was being held, but no shots were fired before she was freed and two suspects were arrested, per Neal...

Lewis Hamilton claimed his sixth victory of the 2016 Formula One season in Sunday’s German Grand Prix at Hockenheim. As at last weekend’s Hungarian GP, the British driver missed out on pole position at the climax of a fiercely contested qualifying session, but enjoyed yet another strong start to pass Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg and dominate from the front. Joining Hamilton on the podium were Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, who worked together to secure Red Bull’s first double-podium finish in more than a year on a day Ferrari were confirmed as the third-best team on the...

Everything was falling into place for Nico Rosberg to end Lewis Hamilton‘s three-race winning streak at Sunday’s German Grand Prix and reclaim the lead in the Formula One drivers’ championship that he had lost to his Mercedes team-mate the week before in Hungary. On Saturday, Rosberg qualified on pole (he won the German race from the front of the grid in 2014), but things started to go wrong as soon as the race began. Hamilton and the two Red Bulls swamped Rosberg on the run to the Hockenheimring’s quick first turn and Hamilton immediately began to pull away. It would only...

Lewis Hamilton made a major statement in the race for the Formula One world title in Germany on Sunday, as he took victory and a subsequent 19-point lead over team-mate Nico Rosberg ahead of the summer break. For the second consecutive week, the world champion passed his fellow Mercedes driver at the start, roaring past him from second place and into the opening corner in the lead. Rosberg, who picked up a five-second penalty for an illegal overtake, could only finish fourth behind the Red Bull duo of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen, who took second and third, respectively. Having...

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg took pole position for the 2016 German F1 Grand Prix ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton after an eventful third qualifying session on the famous Hockenheim track on Saturday. Rosberg aborted his first lap of that session, allowing Hamilton to snatch provisional pole. But the German’s restart let him take the signature position, before Hamilton sluggishly went through the middle sector on the final lap. The win had extra special significance for Rosberg, coming 30 years after his father took pole at the German Grand Prix, according to Puma Motorsport. Meanwhile,...

Lewis Hamilton heads to the 2016 German Grand Prix aiming to enhance his World Drivers’ Championship lead over Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. The three-time World Champion has raced down a 43-point disadvantage after a shaky season start to leapfrog his perennial rival at last weekend’s race in Budapest, Hungary. The pair will be expected to battle it out at the front at Rosberg‘s home event in Hockenheim, with the high-speed straights accompanied by the challenging stadium sector a delight for drivers and fans of the iconic Formula One track. Here is how you can...

As Formula One assessed the pros and cons of the halo concept in the early months of 2016, the most compelling debate to take place concerning increased cockpit safety was the argument Lewis Hamilton had with himself. Or, put another way, the world champion’s internal struggle to ignore his natural racing driver’s instincts and bring himself to accept the arrival of a device that, deep down, he knew would be for the greater good. When the halo first appeared on Sebastian Vettel’s and Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferraris in winter testing in March, Hamilton was mortified F1...

Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg dominated both practice sessions at the German Grand Prix on Friday. The home driver was comfortably ahead of his team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the afternoon, showing superior speed and race pace at the Hockenheim circuit. It was a similar story in the morning, as Rosberg produced a sizzling lap to pull clear of the field. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was third-fastest in both sessions. Rosberg heads into his home race trailing Hamilton by six points after the world champion’s win in Hungary last weekend. The drivers will have a final practice session on Saturday...
