After being scarred by bold promises and overambitious targets, McLaren-Honda are finally beginning to deliver in Formula One. Fernando Alonso‘s seventh-place finish in the Singapore Grand Prix means the team have now scored double the amount of points they managed to scratch together during their worst season in 35 years in 2015. For a partnership that dominated the sport in the 1980s and ’90s, that is still far from good enough, but Alonso has revealed McLaren are looking forward to the 2017 regulation changes, which should allow them to challenge for victories and world championships...

Here we go again. Lewis Hamilton has a disappointing result or two and all of a sudden, the two-time defending Formula One world champion is letting his personal life distract him from winning races. This time, the criticism comes from Jackie Stewart, a three-time champion himself, who has been part of the sport for more than 50 years and forgotten more about F1 than you and I will ever know. He also enjoys hearing himself talk (and with that Scottish brogue, why not?) and all that experience does not mean he can’t be wrong from time to time. “Maybe you can bottom out,” Stewart...

For 45 laps, the Singapore Grand Prix was arguably the most forgettable race of the 2016 Formula One season. The Marina Bay Street Circuit, as ever, looked immaculate under the lights, but there was little substance to complement the style until—in an effort to get their world champion on the podium—Mercedes decided to switch Lewis Hamilton onto a three-stop strategy. Hamilton’s unexpected tyre change re-energised the night race, as Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen tried and failed to keep the British driver behind for third place and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo started to...

As he celebrated his 200th Formula One appearance, Nico Rosberg claimed the best victory of his career in Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix. The German sealed a comprehensive pole position at the Marina Bay track on Saturday and led comfortably for much of the race, but Daniel Ricciardo‘s sudden pit stop just 14 laps from the chequered flag dragged Rosberg into a fight he didn’t want. With much fresher, faster tyres, the Red Bull driver caught the leader by almost three seconds per lap at one stage, and Rosberg suddenly became very vulnerable after being in control for so long. Yet...

Red Bull have a problem simmering. It is only on the back burner for now, but it could become a full-blown grease fire next year. The problem, which was highlighted by the results of Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix, is that they have two young, very quick drivers—possibly future world champions—under contract for 2017. Granted, that’s a nice problem to have, but, as their friends at Mercedes can tell them, having two top-level drivers in a championship-calibre car is sure to cause some headaches. Max Verstappen burst into Formula One last year as a 17-year-old rookie...

Nico Rosberg claimed his eighth victory of the 2016 Formula One season in Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix at the Marina Bay Street Circuit. The Mercedes driver produced a stunning lap in qualifying to secure a comfortable pole position and was flawless at the front during the race, withstanding a late charge from Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo to retake the lead of the drivers’ championship. Joining Rosberg and Ricciardo on the podium was Lewis Hamilton, who—with the help of the Mercedes pit wall—salvaged a third-place finish from a frustrating weekend when the three-time...

Nico Rosberg sailed to the top of the Formula One drivers’ standings on Sunday after he held off a late assault from Red Bull star Daniel Ricciardo to win the 2016 Singapore Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver topped the podium to take the overall standings lead from team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who could only manage a third-place finish behind Rosberg and Ricciardo. The Singapore night sky lit up for Rosberg following the win, and the German could only express his satisfaction following a hard-fought triumph: Sebastian Vettel started last on the grid after suffering a penalty in qualifying...

Nico Rosberg claimed his seventh pole position of the season at the Singapore Grand Prix on Saturday, as he set an impressive lap time of one minute, 40.245 seconds in qualifying. Rosberg’s Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton looked like taking second place after his first run in Q3, but Daniel Ricciardo came out of nowhere to pip him right at the death, per Formula 1: As always on street circuits, overtaking opportunities are hard to come by at Marina Bay, which explains why six of the last eight winners in Singapore have started from pole. In Q1, Ferrari’s chances of catching Mercedes...

Jenson Button finished a lapped 14th in the 2016 season-opening Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park, but far more important for him was the result on the other side of the McLaren-Honda garage. Fernando Alonso‘s collision with the Haas of Esteban Gutierrez on Lap 17, which saw the Spaniard slam into the outside wall of Turn 3 before rolling repeatedly in the gravel trap, had ensured the second year of the renewed partnership had got off to a spectacular, if not exactly successful, start. Despite the sheer violence of the crash—Alonso experienced “a peak impact...
