Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has earned a surprise call-up to England’s final Euro 2012 squad. New manager Roy Hodgson announced the squad Wednesday. Manchester United‘s Rio Ferdinand was the highest-profile snub. Others included United’s Michael Carrick, Norwich City‘s Grant Holt and Manchester City‘s Micah Richards. Oxlade-Chamberlain, 18, has never represented...

The prospect of attending Euro 2012 just became a bit more terrifying. Yes, more terrifying. Attendance at this summer’s prestigious international tournament had already posed serious logistical problems, what with the dual threats of measles and vigilante-style rogue cops. Now, though, it just got worse. In Poland, they’re talking about using something called “sonic cannons”...

The field of strategic prohibition in football now has a new frontier. That frontier is Twitter. Whenever a major international tournament pops up, some manager or another always gets the bright idea to limit his players’ activities. Sometimes they prohibit their players from intimate relations with their wives and girlfriends (though, apparently, Fabio Capello didn’t consider the possibility...

Soccer would be more popular in America if not for TV. Hold on. Let me rephrase. The future popularity of soccer in America has everything to do with television, and doing more with it: More American TV viewers would become more interested in soccer if American commentators and producers did more to teach casual fans about the game. Got it? That’s the gist of what Christopher Medley, a 30-year-old...

I’m an American, and it pains me to say this. It’s true, though: Ask an average American soccer fan which non-American teams he supports, and you’ll get two answers more than two-thirds of the time. Manchester United and England. The first one is a topic for another day. But after Friday’s Euro 2012 draw, it’s time to start thinking about the second one, and time to start...
