So, our finalists are confirmed. Yesterday, Rafael Nadal defeated his arch-rival Roger Federer in straight sets, in what turned out a blowout letdown, 6-3, 6-2. Waiting in his hotel room anxiously at that point was Novak Djokovic, who had earlier in the day drowned Mardy Fish 6-3 ,6-1. Incredibly, we are witnessing a rivalry that could one day transcend that of the legendary Federer-Nadal. This pair...

Tennis fans yesterday were greeted to two foreseeable, yet unpredicted scenarios: The victories of Federer and Nadal in the quarterfinals, and the continued progress of Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka in the women’s draw. Sharapova and Azarenka’s relatively smooth voyage thus far is, to say it moderately, slightly surprising—considering that neither player has been the...

A crash of thunder would have appropriately summed up the day on the ATP tour today at the Miami Masters. We witnessed the unrelenting progress of a Serb hounding after, and the rise of a new American. Well, maybe, not quite so new, Mardy Fish has been on tour a few years now, and has enjoyed his fair share of success. Including, of course, a run to the final at Indian Wells three years ago. Three...

Today was a mixed day at the Sony Ericsson Open, with Federer and Nadal being their dominant selves, against a slightly turbulent backdrop of the women’s results. For one thing, Caroline Wozniacki, who had fairly dominated the tournament at Indian Wells last week, lost for the first time in a while—so it seems—to Andrea Petkovic. If anything, this was hardly a major disappointment....

Several pieces of tennis news struck the minds of the fans today. The press intimation of Ivan Lendl that he would consider seriously lending some coaching aid to Andy Murray and the continued, fearsome progress of Novak Djokovic, as he clocked his 20th-straight win this season. There were, however, other equally eyebrow-raising results—not least of which was probably Juan Martin Del Potro’s...

This is something noteworthy. Andy Murray, the hitherto great challenger to Federer and Nadal, has today posted a fourth straight loss. Well, to be really technical, it’s kind of a third straight loss, if one counts the Miami ATP Masters as his third straight tournament at which he has failed to win a match. This sort of statistic is something of concern. Murray, clearly, hasn’t gotten...

Few parts of any tennis game come as naturally as the forehand. Not everybody, of course, will have a huge forehand, but it is undeniable that it is by far the easiest shot to hit. It requires the fewest extra technical movements, as compared to the backhand, serve or volley—the forehand volley included. In the hands of some players, the forehand has become devastating, an offensive shot par...

Another year, another tournament. Last year witnessed the triumph of Andy Roddick, who, in winning his fifth ATP Masters title, made a nice, short comeback to winning a big, American tournament. Then, however, the power struggle at the top wasn’t quite as intense—a lackadaisical Roger Federer sat at No. 1, while Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were just playing to their rankings. Roddick...

Caroline Wozniacki‘s won at Indian Wells last weekend, in a three-set defeat of Marion Bartoli, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3. It wasn’t ever an entirely breezy affair, with a thrashing of some sort in the second, as Bartoli mercilessly dragged the Danish queen left and right. The only important thing, of course, was that she did ultimately win. How big an occurrence was it? Possibly no more than any other...

It’s funny how things can happen so quickly in sport. This last weekend, in the last rounds of the Indian Wells Masters 1000, was, without saying it, a perfect example—at least a matter in point. One minute pundits had Roger Federer avenging his two defeats to Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, and then, with his loss, Rafa Nadal asserting his dominance over tennis by ending the Serb’s...
