Blustery conditions shook up a leaderboard that started the day with Carl Petterson in the lead and ended with Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh and Carl Pettersson tied at -4, one stroke ahead of Ian Poulter. Rory McIlroy and Jamie Donaldson of Wales, who plays on the European Tour, are both at -2. While winds are usually calm along the southeast coast during the dog days of August, a tropical...

1. Waste not, want not. The key to victory will be to stay out of the waste areas. Golfers who are able to do that will not be found wanting. The sand at Kiawah is soft in places, has shells in places and has vegetation growing in places. Plants tend to be tangly seaside stuff, sure to grab the hosel of the club and nudge shots off line; that is, if you are strong. If you’re not strong,...

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, site of the PGA Championship has history already. It was built to host The Ryder Cup in 1991. While the course was under construction in 1989, there was a little Category 4 hurricane named Hugo that blew through South Carolina just north of Charleston. It rendered the area more than ground under repair for several weeks afterward. Video of...

As they say in golf, every shot makes somebody happy. Ernie Els final putt at the British Open showed him that all the work he had done in the last six months was paying off. Adam Scott found out for the first time playing the last four holes of the British Open just how hard it is to close out a major. Greg Norman, who has had many near misses in majors, talked to and texted Adam...

Kathy Bissell Say it isn’t so. One of the most nerve-wracking yet egalitarian aspects of professional golf is no more. Q-School—as a path to the PGA Tour—bit the dust today just before noon eastern standard time. Many PGA Tour members said over the course of the last year that they hoped there would still be a path for those one or two exceptional players to go through...

Some people can only stand to watch golf if Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson or Rickie Fowler or Bubba Watson or Rory McIlroy are playing. But ask yourself one question: Would Greenbriar have been the most exciting tournament this year if Ted Potter, Jr., the ultimate winner, and Troy Kelly, playoff loser, had been a contest between Phil and Tiger? The answer is yes. ...

OK, it’s a stupid theory, but the way the year has gone for Tiger Woods, it makes as much sense as anything else. Woods has had three victories, two missed cuts, and a WD; erratic play for a guy who up to now has been a cut-making machine. Granted he has a 25 percent winning percentage for this year, but he spoiled us for 15 years with those 74 titles and a habit of being on leaderboards...

Tiger Woods took one more giant step in his march toward history with his victory at the AT&T National, surpassing Jack Nicklaus’ total of 73 PGA Tour titles. Woods now has 74. “It feels great to get to 74 wins and obviously pass Jack,” Woods said afterward. “I did it at 36 years old, and it’s something I’m very proud of.” Nicklaus’...

Upgrading regular PGA Tour events is a good thing. Upgrading ones that have been struggling with fall dates and no FedEx points is more than a good thing. It’s a necessary thing if the PGA Tour is to remain the top golf tour in the world. Starting the PGA Tour in the fall is a great idea to boost the Fall Series. The regular PGA Tour events have taken a lot of hits in the last decade...

Never let it be said that Tiger Woods has no sense of golf history. After winning his 72nd PGA Tour title at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Invitational, he has now tied Jack Nicklaus’s career victory total of 73 by winning the 2012 Memorial Tournament, Nicklaus’ tournament. And he got to shake Nicklaus’ hand afterward. “It’s been pretty nice. Since I turned...
