Kim Clijsters is the new world No. 1. And deservedly so, out of everyone who is playing, she is the best, and the only player capable of matching her, Serena Williams, has been on a very long injury sabbatical. While I am not her biggest fan, I respect what she has done during her comeback. She has won three majors and lifted herself out of the semi-mocked group of one-slam wonders. She has brought...

With Kim Clijsters’ win over Li Na in the final of the Australian open, she has proven herself as one of the greats of this generation. And she has shaken up the pecking order of the greats of this generation Surpassing Serena Williams is still out of the question for someone with just four majors, so that leaves the next two greats of this generation, Venus Williams and Justine Henin. Realistically,...

A Spaniard made it through to the semifinals today. But not quite the one we were expecting. Rafael Nadal has lost his battle against countryman David Ferrer and against his recalcitrant body. A hamstring injury has ended what would have been a fairytale for Nadal and the sport of tennis, it has ended his opportunity to hold all four Grand Slams simultaneously. There were no signs at the start; Nadal...

Venus out in the third round of the Australian Open. Serena at home, nursing a foot. The end is close for these sisters, which to some will bring sadness, and to some a rather guilty pleasure, and for some, a pleasure they had not known since 2004-2006. From birth, these two were raised to be champions…to be a beacon of light for all those under-privileged Americans who long to be something more. So...

He was one of the most in-form players coming into Melbourne Park. Robin Soderling. The big Swede with the huge serve and even bigger groundstrokes was dumped unceremoniously from Melbourne Park by talented 22 year-old, Alexander Dolgopolov. The reversal of fortunes between the two players was stunning. Soderling, who had not even lost a set from the start of the year, looked certain to continue on...

When an interviewer asked Kim Clijsters about how open the draw was because of the vacuum Serena Williams has left in the tournament, she responded with a bit of venom, saying that she “did not pay attention to the other parts of the draw.” Let me tell Kim and her supporters that the absence of Serena Williams made the act of winning her US Open last year, and the Australian Open this year,...

Roger Federer showed today why he deserves the role of favourite in the Australian Open. He outright dominated his opponent, Lukas Lacko. Though he was ranked at world number 97, two weeks ago, he gave Nadal a frightful run in a three-setter, even bagelling him before losing his concentration while Nadal upped his. I haven’t heard of many world number 90-somethings who have bagelled Nadal,...

I’m not a big fan of Clijsters. I’m not sure what gave it away really. She’s no doubt a great, the Hall of Famer kind, of this generation, but still stands a long way back from Venus and Henin, let alone Serena. But I will admit that with Henin and Venus not being right and Serena missing, she’s the best we’ve got. I mean she’s gotta be better than the Slamless paper...

It’s no secret that Serena Williams is the best of her generation. At 13 Grand Slams and counting, almost the sum of the other greats of her generation, sister Venus and Belgian rival Justine Henin, Serena has nothing left to prove. The best serve ever in tennis, arguably the toughest competitor at the majors, and arguably the strongest of all mentally. The only things really missing from Serena’s...
