US Women’s Open Golf: Michelle Wie Not Consistent Enough to Win Major

Michelle Wie shot a six-under 66 in the second round of the U.S. Women's Open on Friday. It was her lowest round ever at the U.S. Open by three strokes.

The problem is that she also shot a two-over 74 on Thursday and has missed six cuts in her last eight LPGA tournaments this year. She finished 33rd and 68th in the other two tournaments. I hate to be a downer, but that's just the reality of it.

Wie, who sniffed a major championship three times as a 15-year-old, hasn't had much success in majors since her first few years on tour. Since 2006, her highest finish at the U.S. Open is 55th place. She's finished in the Top 10 of a major just once in that span (sixth place, 2011 Kraft Nabisco Championship).

As enamored as everyone is with her ability to hit the ball a long way (15th in driving distance on tour), she ranks better than 100th in just one other category this year: sand saves (per LPGA.com). Beyond that, her stats exemplify her overall play. 



Headed into the 2012 U.S. Women's Open, Wie ranked 148th in driving accuracy, 108th in greens in regulation, 146th in putts per GIR, 145th in putting average, 133rd in scoring average, 127th in rounds under par (a grand total of three), 117th in birdies, 127th in rounds in the 60s and 123rd in subpar holes.



Now, that's not to discredit what Wie did on Friday. A six-under 66 is nothing to scoff at. What I'm saying is that to expect her to all of a sudden become a major champion—just like that—after what she's shown the past few years, well, that's just not practical thinking.

Does Wie have the natural ability to win a major? Of course she does, she showed how dangerous she could be the first four years she played in majors. Let's also not forget she's still only 22 years old.
