Rory McIlroy Nearly Misses Tee Time Ahead of Magical European Comeback

Rory McIlroy barely made it to the party. 

The Ryder Cup can be described, more than any tournament on a golf course, as one big raucous affair. Fans cheering and golfers sucking up the emotion like a sponge. 

And the young kid from Northern Ireland nearly missed what turned out to be one of the best comebacks in Ryder Cup history. 

He needed a police escort just to get to Medinah Country Club for his tee time. Missing it very well could have seen Europe lose out on a crucial point and derail what was a memorable come-from-behind victory over the Americans who were, up to that point, simply dominant. 

Perhaps all you need to turn things around is a near tragedy to get all the wiggles out. 

McIlroy tells the story of nearly missing what was a pretty big day at work, via The Daily Mail. 

I woke up at nine to call Caroline (girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki) in Beijing and after that I was just hanging around. 


For some reason I had it in my head I was playing at 12.25 instead of 11.25. I read the tee times on my phone - they are obviously on Eastern time and it's Central time here. 


I got a couple of missed calls from a funny number about half 10 and was thinking "who's that?", so I didn't answer. Then I got a call from Conor Ridge, my manager, at 11 asking if I was at the golf course yet.

I love this story. 

It touches upon feelings of dread we have all suffered the minute we wake up with that notion we have overslept. 

It's something we can all relate to. 

On the other side, there are the parts of the story we will never get to experience.

You know, like getting a call from Caroline Wozniacki in the morning and then fiddling around the hotel before a State Trooper drives him to the course.
