Wimbledon is by far and away the most important title in the world of tennis, and the sport will once again put itself front and center for two weeks at the All-England Tennis Club in London starting July 29. There are a number of storylines in this year’s tournament, but it’s hard to find a bigger one than that being authored by Serena Williams. Williams is coming off of a memorable...

Slow and steady wins the race, and that axiom held true Sunday when Jordan Spieth won the 2015 U.S. Open. Aside from a double bogey on 17, the 21-year-old was a model of consistency as he maneuvered his way across Chambers Bay. Of course, Spieth needed a little bit of luck along the way. If Dustin Johnson had made his birdie putt on 18, then the narrative would have been completely different, and Spieth...

Roger Federer had a rally with a fan at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, which probably didn’t end as he expected. The fan held his own with a few volleys against the Swiss maestro before finishing off with a between-the-legs shot. Federer won the tournament on Sunday for the eighth time in his career, setting himself up for a run at Wimbledon next week. [h/t @ovgukazanc] Read more...

UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. — There’s always a star in the future. And in the wings. There’s always another great one ready to move in, to keep us enthralled in golf. Always another Jack Nicklaus. Or Tiger Woods. Always a Jordan Spieth. He’s not the new Tiger, because Woods was unique in his preparation, his focus and intensity, and his ability to will himself to victory while the...

The groans over Dustin Johnson’s 72nd-hole three-wack and cheers for Jordan Spieth’s triumph have barely subsided, and we’re already thinking about the next major. The wait between the Masters and the U.S. Open always seems like an eternity, but the pause between the U.S. Open and the Open Championship is always seemingly brief, isn’t it? The golf calendar’s oldest...

There is no matchup in sports quite as intriguing as an athlete’s skill going up against his or her mental strength. After all, as humans, we are so often our own worst enemies. Dustin Johnson, a man who is rapidly becoming golf’s most engaging tragic hero, exemplifies that concept. The 30-year-old’s agonizing runner-up finish at the U.S. Open on Sunday was a microcosm of what has...

Amid the endless stretches of brown at Chambers Bay, another color rose just as the sun set on the 2015 U.S. Open. It was gold, the color of the new era that dawned for golf on Sunday. Jordan Spieth’s survival in golf’s toughest test unmistakably signals that the game has moved on to new hands. New and young. With victories in the year’s first two majors, Spieth has served notice...

New Zealand ended a four-year drought on Saturday to claim their first Under-20 World Championship since 2011, beating England 21-16 in the tournament’s final. In preparation for the competition’s senior counterpart later this year, the starlets of world rugby laid on a terrific contest over the past three weeks, giving an indication of who will shine brightest in the years to come. It’s...

The message from players to the USGA and, by extension, Chambers Bay was “We’re just not that into you,” except for maybe Jordan Spieth, who won his second major in a row. The 115th U.S. Open had putting browns instead of putting greens and elicited any number of insults and criticisms. Billy Horschel, the 2014 FedEx Cup champion, was vocal about his distaste for Chambers Bay....

Roger Federer and Andy Murray hauled in big titles at Halle and the Queen’s Club in London. Now the real ultimate grass-courts test will begin with the Wimbledon draw later this week. Meanwhile, other stars are battling injuries, but there have been a couple of success stories from journeymen. Which ones will keep their momentum for Wimbledon? Who is ready to rebound? There’s a different...
