In 2010, the three newest additions to the grid, Lotus, Hispania and Virgin, were at the back having their own private feud. They never really quite got up to the pace of the rest of the grid, despite their best efforts. The Lotus was a conservative car (when first released it had the down force of a 2003 Minardi), the Virgin car had a fuel tank that was too small had the CFD design...

The BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells gets underway starting March 7. It is easy to see that the 36-year-old tournament has grown into a major attraction for tennis fans in this country as the stands and grounds become packed with spectators each year when March rolls around. Some tennis aficionados have grown so enamored with the annual event, they now call it California’s version of a fifth...

Frank Chirkinian wrote the playbook when it comes to televised golf, and the rest— myself included—have just followed in his wake. To appreciate what Frank Chirkinian used to do for a living, imagine having between 15 and 20 small television screens—like the portable, 10” monitors— in three or four rows in front of you. Today there’s probably more. ...

We all know about Serena Williams, Monica Seles, Steffi Graf, et al., and their unbreakable mental games. But what about their opposites? Choking can happen any time: when up a set, when in a tight spot, or when close to the finish line. This week, we all know that Tiger Woods is not playing. To me, this is not an issue. Instead, I get to watch Martin Kaymer, Luke Donald, Lee Westwood and Graeme McDowell. Not a bad weekend. However, the bandwagon golf fan could care less who else is playing. If it isn’t Tiger, they don’t care. Maybe not just that, just because it isn’t Tiger or some notable American golfer (Couples...

Frank Chirkinian, the legendary CBS producer, passed away today at the age of 84, and golf fans the world over owe him their respect and heartfelt thanks. For nearly 40 years, Chirkinian produced the Masters telecast for CBS. Nicknamed “The Ayatollah,” a nickname he admitted to liking (“It beat being called Adolf.”), he is considered to be the father of televised golf....

The last match that Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer played against each other in a Grand Slam (GS) tournament was in the finals of the Australian Open, 2009. Today, Nadal is the current holder of three GS titles. For the first time since 2003, Federer is not the current holder of any and it looks like it is time to write “finis” to the story of their rivalry. This rivalry is valued...

Jack Nicklaus has said he still believes Tiger Woods will break his record of 18 major championships. First, a disclosure. I didn’t see Jack Nicklaus in his prime. In fact, the only major I remember the Golden Bear winning was his last, the ’86 Masters. But I did see Tiger Woods when he was dominating—no, make that obliterating—the PGA Tour. His emphatic coming out party at...

Tennis history is replete with notable encounters, epic matches that have shaped its course. Generations of different styles and players have come and gone, much as a wave that inexorably ebbs and flows. It has been the rule of 10: every 10 years, a new age, new rulers, a new dominant style of tennis. In the 1970s, Borg came to rule over the Lavers and Newcombes, only to be overtaken by McEnroe and...

It seems that Serena has another injury, one that is life threatening. Her agents confirmed that Williams was diagnosed with a blot clot in her lungs, which is called pulmonary embolism. This is currently life threatening and could have possibly killed her. Due to this, she may never come back to tennis or will have to take a break for a few months, or maybe even years. The question is: Who will...
