Four times a year tennis has its own version of March Madness with the release of the main singles draws for its major tournaments. These brackets set the parameters for the events that dominate tennis fans’ lives for two weeks at a time. They chart the path to glory for the top contenders and the road to relevance for everybody else. They are either prophetical roadmaps or useless pieces of...

Rivalry or individual accolades? Both Roger and Rafa have the chance to make history in their respective trophy rooms. With the Australian Open less than a few days away, Roger Federer will arrive under the large shadow being cast by his younger rival Rafael Nadal. Nadal currently holds the past three Grand Slams in his pocket and is looking to be the first men’s player to hold all four Slams...

Bobby Jones and Rod Laver commiserate over the Grand Slam. January 14, 2011 From the Desk of Bobby Jones Heaven Re: The Grand Slam Dear Rod, I just wanted to write and say how sorry I am about you being subjected to all this talk about Rafael Nadal and the Grand Slam. You handled yourself quite well in that interview yesterday, but I know how frustrated you must be. I felt the same...

Being that the 2010 season ended just three weeks ago, most players had enough...

Only twice in the past 23 slams, has someone other than Nadal or Federer help up the championship trophy at the end, It’s...

14-8. This is no doubt the figure that pops into any conversation on the rivalry between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, because it is the only constant in what has come to be a heated and highly bigoted debate on the GOAT. Often, Rafael Nadal’s claims, brought newfound credibility by his completing the career slam this year, are now upheld above Federer’s; that he should lead 14-8 in their...

In 1969 Rod Laver accomplished a feat no man has matched in 41 years of tennis: winning all four majors in a calendar year. Even Roger Federer hasn’t sniffed the Grand Slam, although in 2006 and 2007 he had a chance to hold all four majors titles. Nadal denied him both times at Roland Garros. Now it’s Rafa’s chance to claim the “Successive Slam.” ...

Regardless of the comparative merits of a “calendar” grand slam and a “consecutive” (four in a row spanning two seasons) grand slam, I think we have waited too long for either. Consider that the last calendar slam was achieved in 1969 by Rod Laver and the last consecutive slam by Don Budge in 1926, and you get my point. In the men’s game today we enjoy an embarrassment...

Another year has come and gone in Mexico and the story seems all too familiar. The giants are struggling to retain their old glory, the newcomers hope to avoid relegation and the transfer market is full of new signings and rumors of potential moves that have fans sitting on the edge of their couches. With a total of 81 players changing teams there is a great deal of optimism around the league. Some...
